It was the reaction we were all craving in a bid to push forward in these final weeks, and you couldn't have asked for a better result than that. In a game that could have finished a lot worse for the Newcastle Jets, our City girls have reminded the league what they can do.
The match began with a surprising Jets chance, which was saved well by Sally James in goal, before City found their footing in the 25th minute as returnee Maria Rojas found her way onto the scoresheet after a Rhianna Pollicina shot rebounded off the post into her path.
Chances were flying everywhere before the half-time whistle, with City unfortunate to only go into the sheds with a 1-0 lead at half-time.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, our girls had waited long enough, ending the Jets' resistance with a lovely curling strike from Pollicina to make it two, shortly followed by Bryleeh Henry who finished well into the bottom corner to make it three. Finally, Hannah Wilkinson followed up yet another Pollicina strike to put the cherry on top, making it a massive 4-0 in the end.
What did we learn? Find out now:
Our returnees give us title-winning quality
City fans, we have some great quality on our hands in Holly McNamara and Maria Rojas.
These two showed exactly what we have been missing in an attacking sense, creating some impressive forward moves which lead to fantastic chances. Not only do McNamara and Rojas create play themselves, but just their sheer presence is enough to open up space for Pollicina, who on another day could have had a hat-trick.
In terms of what it means for our season, why shouldn't we be aiming for a Grand Final bout? Our girls are more than good enough to come home with a trophy.
These are exciting times for City, and we are in a fantastic position being five points clear of dropping out of the top four.
The race is on
Four games to go, and so much to play for! Our girls not only have to keep up the pace to maintain our Finals spot, but there is also a slim chance at the Premier's Plate.
Sydney FC belted league-leaders Western United 3-0 over the weekend, meaning that it really is anybody's game. A few more outrageous results go our way, and we could genuinely 'Steven Bradbury' this title race.
A massive Melbourne Derby next Monday will really show where we are at leading into these final weeks; a big win would do wonders for our confidence.
City game plan at its best
One thing that we have done really well this season is live and breathe the 'City' philosophy, ensuring the possession statistic heavily favours our City girls. After all, the opposition can't score if they don't have the ball!
The 66% possession rate helped us march toward a seventh clean sheet this season, whilst our passing rate nearly doubled that of the Jets. We also registered a solid 22 shots - 13 on target - to round out a dominant performance.
Dario Vidosic has started his coaching career very well considering how sudden the appointment was due to the internal reshuffle. If he can keep pushing the girls to play our way, tidy up the passing accuracy, and focus on clinical finishing, this may just be a very successful end to the season.
