Talking points preview: City vs Roar

After what can only be described as one of the greatest wins in club history on the weekend against Sydney FC, City’s quest for the A-League Women’s Premiership continues tomorrow night as we face the Roar in Brisbane.

Here are the big talking points ahead of this huge match:

The Goalkeeper of the Year

Melissa Barbieri. The best. Simply incredible. One of the greatest Australian footballers of all time.

To say that Bubs has had a good season between the sticks for City would be understating it enormously. Time and time again she has been there to make the save that won us points or kept us in the game, and last weekend was no exception.

Making world-class saves look easy, Bubs is in the form of her life and it is truly amazing to be able to witness her greatness in this team.

Holly’s heartbreak

Holly McNamara has been this season’s breakout star. Her first season at A-League level has seen her score four goals and provide three assists as well as earn a call-up to the Matildas' Asian Cup squad.

Unfortunately, the worst has been confirmed after she went down without contact last weekend: she has indeed suffered a ruptured ACL. After fighting back from an ACL injury in her teens, a second major injury like this is completely devastating, and all of us at Talking City would like to express our deepest sympathy to Holly and wish her all the best for her recovery.

She has proven this year that she is one hell of a fighter, and she will absolutely come back stronger.

In the meantime, the team will be looking to fill the massive hole that Holly’s absence leaves in our attack.

This team can achieve greatness

Melbourne City are overachievers in the women’s side of the game; So many titles over so many years, so many brilliant teams.

This season is no exception. From solid defensive displays to dominance up front, this team is truly something special.

Now only a few games away from winning another Premiership, can the girls get there? These next few weeks will be difficult challenges, but if any team can do it it’s this one.

The guts and determination shown to hold on and get the three points against a terrific Sydney side on the weekend despite missing Stott and Wilkinson to international duty and losing McNamara was absolutely inspiring.

This team has an incredible mentality, and a win on Thursday night against the Roar would be huge in terms of our pursuit of silverware this season.
