'Still Our Bunnies': Three things we learned - City vs WU

Melbourne City is back on the winner's list after a come-from-behind win over Western United in our first home match of the season. Goals to Craig Noone and Jamie Maclaren were enough to get over the line in what was a "never say die" performance.

Here's what we learned from the fifth edition of the #NotaDerby.

Curtis was a Good re-signing:

From his pinpoint passing to his all-round solid defending, I saw enough in Curtis Good yesterday to know that extending his contract was an absolute no-brainer. This particular no-brainer decision is all the more justified when you consider that his injury troubles are seemingly a thing of the past too. That's a credit to how hard he's worked to rebuild his body to enable him to play 90 minutes most weeks in recent times.

Our set-piece defending needs work:

Two of the three goals we have let in this season have been from set-piece situations.

Against Adelaide, we left Tomi Juric relatively unmarked on the edge of the box which was the catalyst for our downfall in round two, then it was unrecognised centre-back Ivan Vujica's turn to nod home Western United's first goal yesterday from a corner. Both of these scenarios made our man-marking strategies look poor. Giving opposition players leeway like that is only going to be detrimental to our team. It is crucial that our defending from set-pieces improves.

There's serious competition until Nabbout returns:

Tilio, Tsubaki, Colakovski? Take your pick.

No matter who gets the most game time while Andrew Nabbout recovers from injury, fans are in for bucketloads of excitement and skill. All three produced promising moments of pace, trickery and determination yesterday and that's what you want to see from any first-team player, let alone youngsters.

In particular, you cannot go past Stefan Colakovski's cheetah-like run in-behind a sleepy Western United defence to set up the winner. To then have the composure to pick out Jamie Maclaren with an inch-perfect pass across goal... I mean, talk about the ideal "super-sub" appearance.
