SIGNING: Socceroo Mathew Leckie signs three-year deal at City

MASSIVE news out of the club this afternoon with Melbourne City announcing Socceroo and former Hertha Berlin forward Mathew Leckie on a three-year deal.

Currently away with the Australian national team for our World Cup Qualifiers, Leckie won’t be joining City until the 2021/22 pre-season.

The 30-year-old made 17 Bundesliga appearances in 2020/21 for Hertha, but departs the club having only contributed one assist over the course of the campaign. The forward has 139 appearances in the German top-flight overall, having started out at Adelaide United before a big move to Borussia Monchengladbach kicked off an impressive career in the country’s top two tiers.

Once renowned for his lightning pace, Leckie is a versatile forward who has mostly been utilised as a winger who can play on either flank, but has also spent a significant amount of time as a striker, where he lined up for Australia the other night against Kuwait, scoring within 55 seconds.

Leckie’s acquisition on a three-year deal is likely to have ramifications for our ability to keep hold of this season’s front three, with Andrew Nabbout and Craig Noone’s contracts both expiring at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Leckie's addition to the squad builds on our impressive contingent of Melbourne natives - including Maclaren, Good, Nabbout, and Colakovski - providing an important local connection for fans.
