With the upcoming W-League season just under a week away, Melbourne City have secured Serbian international Milica Mijatović, with the attacking midfielder joining from Norwegian Toppserien side Arna-Bjørnar.
With previous experience in France and Sweden, Mijatović brings with her all the qualities of a talented playmaker, balancing her creative dribbling with excellent control and exceptional strength to keep the ball in tight spaces before working a pass through to her advancing teammates.
These qualities are also indicative of her ability to lead the line as a target forward, as she has done in 21 of her 22 appearances for Arna-Bjørnar in the most recent Toppserien division, scoring seven goals along the way.
At 28-years-old, Mijatović has made 33 appearances for her national team since making her debut back in 2011.
Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, told the club’s website:
“She is strong, mobile, scores goals and is a versatile attacking player who can play right across the front line.”
Whilst Mijatović appears a solid signing, the success of her Melbourne City stint may be dependent on the ability of our other forwards to finish the chances she creates. We’re certainly no experts on women’s football – or any football, really – but if our *elite* YouTube highlights scouting lead us to any conclusion, it was that Mijatović’s inclusion in the squad doesn’t feel as though it’ll unquestionably influence a greater output of goals.
The acquisition of an attacking midfielder was desperately needed to strengthen the squad for this season and Mijatović may very well flourish in that position, but it feels as though we’re one big forward signing from a VERY intimidating lineup.
...watch her absolutely destroy the league and score bags of goals for us now that we've said that...
City’s W-League campaign kicks off away to Newcastle Jets at 6pm on Sunday, November 17.
