'Scoring goals for fun': Three things we learned - City vs Brisbane

What a performance from our City girls at Casey Fields today, following up our field day against Wellington in Round 1 with a dominant 3-0 win over Brisbane Roar to shoot straight back to the top of the table.

It was a fairly open and competitive game to start with under the harsh sun at Casey Fields, with all appearing to go to plan for Dario Vidosic as we won a penalty early. However, to the surprise of everyone, this chance was uncharacteristically squandered by Maria Rojas in the eighth minute.

Fortunately, our girls persevered throughout the first hot day of the summer, scoring in the 30th minute to put us up 1-0 at the break. Maria Rojas finally got her goal in the 50th minute with her follow-up to Daniela Galic’s great (albeit saved) first-time shot in the box.

Hardly a contest from there on, loanee Emina Ekic got off the mark for the club with a composed finish into the bottom right-hand corner.

With plenty of positives, here are the three things we learned against the Roar:

Scoring goals for fun

If the Wellington Phoenix drubbing wasn’t enough proof that we have bags of goals in us this season, the girls surely put those doubts to bed this afternoon. Seven goals in the opening two matches is an outstanding stat for a team that is currently missing a few key players such as Holly McNamara and Hannah Wilkinson.

Although Rojas is only an injury replacement until December, surely Vidosic will be looking at any possible way to keep her on. She is a magnet to the ball and just knows how to get it forward.

Already a brilliant start to the season, there is no reason not to celebrate the performances our City girls have put in so far. Let's get behind them and push on, for this could be a season to remember.

Daniela Galic’s time is now

Wow! What an absolute star. When the club announced Galic, I thought it was a fantastic move to prepare for the future, but I never expected this. The imposing midfielder has fit right in from the outset of her maiden professional season, and at only 16 years of age looks to have an incredibly bright future.

Almost getting her first professional goal today, Galic was fantastic right from the get-go, passing the ball expertly while certainly not afraid to take a shot on. This surely means her first goal isn’t too far away.

It is what Melbourne City does so incredibly well. Finding these talented young players and living by the philosophy: If you’re good enough, you’ll play. Age means nothing if you can pull out performances like that.

Dominant start to Dario’s managerial career

Oh yes, what a start it has been. Top of the league by superior goal difference and it is only round two!

While Dario Vidosic may not have been expecting to take the helm of such a talented squad so quickly in his career, he will surely relish the task of getting the best out of his players. They have proven their talent so far; the belief is surely there for another successful season.

Next week, we look onto our next match against the Newcastle Jets, who have had a topsy-turvy start to this season so far; the Jets having already lost to the Roar in Round 1 bodes well for us as we look to continue our brilliant form.

Who knows? Maybe this is the start of something special for Dario. Just remember, Patrick Kisnorbo started with our Youth and Women’s sides too…
