REACTION: City fans say goodbye to Captain Catley

There is perhaps no player more deserving of a dream European move than Steph Catley.

The 26-year-old departs Melbourne City as the club’s record appearance-maker (62) and has played an instrumental role in winning an unprecedented four W-League titles in her five seasons at the club, also serving as an inspirational captain since 2016/17.

For the Matildas, Catley has become a national hero; one of the foremost faces of Australian women’s football and a role model to young footballers across the country. She presently has 82 senior national team caps to her name.

The talented defender departs City to join fellow Matilda Caitlin Foord and ex-City manager Joe Montemurro at Arsenal FC in the FA Women’s Super League. The Gunners have traditionally been England’s premier Women’s football team, despite having finished third during the prematurely-disrupted 2019/20 season. The team should be expecting to add another league title to their trophy cabinet in 2020/21, especially with the world’s premier left-back now at their disposal.

One of the greatest City players ever, Catley’s departure is an enormous loss for fans of the club, though it’s difficult to feel anything but pride for all that she has accomplished in the past and all that we hope she’ll accomplish in the future at Arsenal.

Here’s some of the online fan reaction to hearing of the departure of a club legend:
