Emma Checker’s departure from Melbourne City appears to have been leaked today, with the defender’s new club revealed to be Icelandic club UMF Selfoss.
The impending move, which hadn’t yet been officially announced by City or mentioned on any of Checker’s social media accounts, was revealed in the 23-player Matildas squad set to take on Germany and the Netherlands later in April.
The move to a European club enables Checker to be selected for the upcoming internationals, with the squad comprised of only non-domestic-based players – all but two of the 23 are based in Europe.
Checker was a late signing for City ahead of their 2020/21 W-League campaign, having arrived following a disrupted stint with FC Fleury 91 in France.
Checker made 23 appearances for Melbourne City between 2019 and 2021, captaining the team throughout the 2020/21 season and scoring one goal.
