Melbourne City are set for another Friday night blockbuster, with the boys playing host to an in-form Wanderers team at AAMI Park tomorrow.
City were victorious again in their most recent fixture, downing the fancied Central Coast Mariners 2-0 at home in what was another dominant performance from the team.
Western Sydney have turned things around since losing to us in late February, winning all three of their fixtures since then, most recently downing Perth Glory 3-0 in what was an undeniably one-sided affair.
With Nuno Reis named to the matchday squad, there’s no notable injury news to cover, so let’s get into the biggest talking points heading into the game:
Six in a row – and what that would mean
You’re all well-aware of the record on the horizon by now, so we’ll focus instead on exactly what that historic sixth-consecutive win would mean if we’re able to get another one over the Wanderers on Friday night.
Throughout this undefeated run, we’ve been knocking off proposed ‘title contenders left, right and centre, with fancied teams Sydney FC (we’re counting them despite their current position), Macarthur and Central Coast all falling to the might of Melbourne City.
Having already defeated them once – and comfortably – we now have a chance to face an improved Wanderers side who occupy second place on the table and further establish ourselves as the team to beat in 2020/21.
JMac’s licking his lips
The circumstances surrounding this game literally couldn’t get better for Jamie Maclaren.
Having scored 16 goals from his 14 meetings with Western Sydney, Maclaren has been TERRORISING – as in, ‘goal every 76 minutes’-levels of terrorising – the Wanderers for years now.
Hosting Western Sydney at beautiful AAMI Park and with his team arguably playing the best football that fans have ever seen, Maclaren couldn’t be any more confident of scoring in his sixth-consecutive game, breaking the record set by Ross McCormack in 2017/18.
The return of active*
Credit where credit’s due, we’ve asterisked that title because the City Terrace have done their best to create as much of an atmosphere as possible despite all of the restrictions they’ve faced since the return of live football at AAMI.
This Friday though, active will be back for real, with the club announcing the lifting of stadium-wide restrictions on standing and chanting, so the Terrace will hopefully be business as usual tomorrow night.
Here’s hoping that this move attracts new and returning fans to the game and bolsters the atmosphere even more ahead of what could be a historic night for the club.
