So far in the 2019 season we have seen a struggle to keep a clean sheet and a lot of the blame for this has been attributed to Dean Bouzanis. Whilst Dean has made mistakes this season, could there be more to the defensive woes than just an out of form goalkeeper?
For the clash against Newcastle a change was
made and Tom Glover was given the starting responsibilities where he went on to make a fantastic start, keeping a clean sheet and making many fine stops.
We then move forward to the all-important Christmas Derby where the defence stuggled with the Victory front three and allowed Ola to open the scoring with a free header at the back post before he later doubled up with a controversial second goal.
The defence looked at sea against a well-structured team and the centre back partnership of Curtis Good and Harrison Delbridge showed signs of cracking.
This partnership has played all bar one game with an injury to Richard Windbichler meaning that there were no other centre backs pushing for selection but he is now returning to full fitness. Is now the time for a change? Time to give Windbichler another run?
In his one starting performance he was outstanding and looked like a capable replacement for the now-departed Bart Schenekveld. Against Victory we saw Delbridge finally break his duck and score his first goal for the club. He alongside the rest of the team had a well below par first 45 minutes but showed some fight and put together a better second half.
The centre back pairing of Good & Delbridge had 24 duels, with Delbridge having the lion‘s share with 18 of those, winning 12. Good competed in 6 duels and won 4 of them. Delbridge also managed to make the lion‘s share of clearances and interceptions. Over the course of 90 minutes Good only completed one tackle.
Is now the time to change the centre back pairing and bring in Windbichler, in partnership with Delbridge? Even if he’s not at full fitness now seems like the right time to make a change and search for the elusive clean sheet.
Would you make a change ahead of our clash against Sydney FC?
