Friday night’s game against Newcastle Jets will mark the beginning of a very long goodbye from Melbourne City fans to Connor Metcalfe, with the club today announcing that the midfielder will depart at the end of the 2021/22 season.
The 22-year-old has signed a contract with German second-tier outfit FC St. Pauli and will link up with fellow Socceroo Jackson Irvine at the club next season.
Metcalfe is City’s longest-serving player in terms of time spent at the club, having arrived at Melbourne City as a 15-year-old in 2015, joining our NPL set-up.
The midfielder was also a key member of the club’s famous 2017 Foxtel Y-League-winning squad that included several players who’ve since gone on to make their first-team debuts.
Metcalfe was first added to City’s A-League squad in 2018 under the Warren Joyce regime and had his breakout moment in the team’s 2019 FFA Cup campaign under Erick Mombaerts, becoming a first-team starting regular from the 2020/21 season onwards.
His standout contribution will, of course, be his involvement in City’s inaugural Premiership win in 2020/21 and fans will forever remember his part in the club’s first piece of league silverware.
The overseas move comes at the right time in Metcalfe’s burgeoning career, having now spent two seasons as one of the A-League Men’s best midfielders. The 22-year-old will have around 85 senior appearances to his name when the time comes for him to finally depart the club.
All at Talking City thank Connor for his contributions to the club over his seven years here and wish him all the best as he takes the next step in his career.
Oh no this is terrible
