City visa players available for potential return of A-League

Updated: May 8, 2020

As first reported by FTBL, the A-League is gearing up for a return in August with the plan to complete all remaining games, as well as finals, in the space of a 4-week blitz with the games all likely to take place in NSW.

The strict quarantine laws that Australia has implemented will be a major hurdle for the clubs that allowed their visa signings to fly home during the height of the pandemic.

FTBL speaks with Bruce Djite, Adelaide United football director, who says that he would be surprised if all of United’s foreign contingent returns to play in the remaining games if this plan comes to fruition. Other clubs may face similar scenarios with players stranded or not wanting to travel back from overseas.

We understand that Melbourne City is in a solid position with only one visa player leaving the country to be with his family but he may still be able to return to play out the rest of the season if the football bonanza is able to come to life.

Clubs are looking to return to training in July with a short “preseason” ahead of games beginning in August.

What do you think of the proposal?
