There’ll be a certain South American flavour to our attacking build-ups this season, with City following up last week’s signing of winger Javier Cabrera by announcing their acquisition of fellow Uruguayan Adrián Luna.
A bit like his compatriot, Luna’s name is likely one you won’t have heard much of before, but we’ve already done the internet-scouring for you.
Having spent recent years in the Mexican first and second divisions with Veracruz and Venados respectively, the 27-year-old plays out on the right wing, but can also fill in as a second striker or out on the opposite flank.
In this sense, Cabrera and Luna share quite an amusing set of similarities:
Both Uruguayans stand at 5’5”, both are right-footed wingers who can play more centrally if required and both spent parts of 2018/19 playing in the Mexican top-flight.
In fact, the new City teammates have actually played together in the past, having come through the youth ranks of Uruguayan club Montevideo Wanderers, before linking up in their national team’s U20 setup.
Describing his style of play, Luna explained to City’s website:
“I like to play football on the front foot and link up with my teammates to create and score goals, whether I’m playing in the midfield or up front.”
“I share the same ambitions as the club and the head coach; to win by playing exciting, attacking football. I have come to help the team achieve success this season and make the fans proud.”
Seemingly capable of playing as both a creator and a goal-scorer, Luna could prove to be a key acquisition as we strive for a greater attacking output and ACL-qualification in the upcoming campaign.
