It's been a big day for Melbourne City's women's side, with this morning's Chinatsu Kira signing being followed up by this afternoon's announcement of the key re-signing of Emma Checker.
Having initially departed the club in June to link up with French First Division side Fleury 91, the Matilda finds herself back in Melbourne following a season-ending stress fracture that spelled the end of her time in France.
Having made 14 appearances for the double-winning 2019/20 City squad, Checker proved herself to be a consistent performer whose class was perhaps overshadowed by the dominance and versatility of defensive partner Rebekah Stott. It was through her reliability and resolute defending that Checker forced her way back into national team selections again, earning herself an appearance in either fixture of the Matildas’ two-game friendly series against Chile in 2019.
Checker could also prove to be a candidate for the captaincy role recently vacated by Steph Catley, with the 24-year-old having previously served as Adelaide’s skipper and renowned for her on-field leadership.
City's 2020-21 W-League season is scheduled to kick off with a big Grand Final rematch against Sydney FC on December 30.
