Melbourne City’s FFA Cup opponents Campbelltown City are in incredible form ahead of the Round of 32 matchup, sitting comfortably atop the NPL South Australia table with two games in hand over second-place.
Campbelltown also dominated in 2018, claiming the NPL SA Premiership and Championship before going on to become NPL Australia champions, holding off Queensland Lions FC in the final which ended 2-1.
The Red Devils have developed an attacking style of play which capitalises on the individual quality and fluent interplay of the side’s front three, with the club leading the league in term of goals scored at 46, equating to 2.66 per game.
Wingers Luigi DiTroia and Yohei Matsumoto provide a huge threat up front, scoring 11 goals from 18 appearances and 9 from 18 respectively in 2019. Equally, the speedsters are known to take on their opponents in wide areas before putting balls in for their more central teammates to run on to.
Melbourne City fans will be familiar with centre forward Marc Marino, who made 9 appearances for the A-League side between 2014 and 2016.
Experienced ex-A-League campaigner Iain Fyfe is likely to start against Melbourne on Wednesday night, with the central defender boasting a 124-game A-League career for Adelaide, Sydney and Newcastle. Fyfe will prove to be a dangerous aerial threat from corners and set pieces, having scored 7 goals in 16 matches this season.
Campbelltown’s head coach is former-Socceroo Joe Mullen, whose son Daniel and nephews Matthew and Alex all play for the club.
Melbourne City will head to Steve Woodcock Sports Centre in South Australia for the FFA Cup Round of 16 fixture against Campbelltown City on Wednesday, July 31. Kick-off is at 7:30pm.
