City pull off huge signing of Matildas star Emily van Egmond

Melbourne City’s squad has been bolstered ahead of the upcoming W-League season with the huge acquisition of Matildas starting-midfielder Emily van Egmond on a one-year deal.

Having departed the Newcastle Jets earlier this month, van Egmond arrives at City with 90 international caps to her name.

Debuting in a friendly against DPR Korea in 2010, van Egmond has featured in three World Cup campaigns, including 2011, 2015 and 2019, where she started all four matches in France earlier this year.

At 179cm (5’10”), van Egmond is known as a tough midfielder who asserts her physicality over the game, but who is also very technically-strong on the ball and capable of picking out dangerous passing options.

Speaking to Pro Soccer USA¸ Marc Skinner, coach of the Orlando Pride (where she will assumably return post-W-League), had this to say about the player:

“Emily has the ability to see the game before it’s happened.

“She finds space, she creates space.”

van Egmond boasts a considerable resumé having played with Canberra, WSW and Newcastle in the W-League; Seattle Reign, Chicago Red Stars and Orlando Pride in the NWSL; and FFC Frankfurt and Vfl Wolfsburg in the Frauen-Bundesliga. The star-Matilda has also made a Champion’s League appearance for Danish club Fortuna Hjørring in the Round of 32 knockouts.

The move was unofficially confirmed earlier this week when a Bundoora café, ‘Gridlock Coffee Roasters’, mentioned a certain ‘Emily van Egmond from Melbourne City Football Club’ in a caption for one of their Instagram posts. Whoops.

At 26, van Egmond looks to be in the prime of her career, and fans will surely hope that she’s here for several seasons to come.
