Emma Checker’s departure from Melbourne City earlier this morning could mark the beginning of an anticipated mass exodus of Matildas leaving for European leagues in the coming months, with the defender signing with French first-division side Fleury 91.
Finishing 7th in the French Division 1 Arkema last season, which ended prematurely after 16 games thanks to COVID-19, Fleury 91 are a club based in the outskirts of the country’s capital Paris and have been battling it out in the top tier since 2017.
Our first big-name signing of the W-League off-season, Checker was a key cog in our impenetrable back-three setup which conceded just four goals throughout the entire campaign.
Her W-League form soon earned her the national team opportunities she’d been deserving of, featuring for the Matildas late in 2019.
However, Checker’s departure will be a permanent one, with the possibility of a return to the W-League not feasible due to the overlap between the two leagues.
Checker departs City with 14 appearances and a W-League title under her belt.
