Captain Checker returns for two more years with City

Melbourne City’s activity in the W-League transfer space continues, with the club announcing the re-signing of Emma Checker on a two-year deal.

Checker returns for a third and fourth season at Melbourne City following a brief stint with Icelandic side Selfoss. The 25-year-old central defender played an integral part with our W-League double-winning side in 2019/20, before going on to captain the team in 2020/21, a role which she will likely reprise for the upcoming campaign.

A consistent performer, resolute defender and proven leader, Checker forced her way back into national team considerations in 2019, appearing twice against Chile that year, and has remained around about the Matildas fold ever since.

Checker has 23 Melbourne City appearances to her name at present and could soon overtake the likes of Kyah Simon, Yukari Kinga and Jess Fishlock as she climbs up the all-time list.

The signing comes a handful of days after the announcement of Rebekah Stott’s return to professional football with City, joining the club for the 2021/22 season.

Stott is City’s joint-top appearance-maker in the W-League along with Steph Catley, having both featured 62 times for the team. The Kiwi will be looking to add to her four Championships and two Premierships with City over the course of the upcoming season.

You can follow Stott’s journey as she battled with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and support her cause here.
