In true Melbourne City fashion, this morning’s announcement of the arrival of Uruguayan forward Javier Cabrera raised more than a few eyebrows amongst fans, leading to the inevitable, “We signed who?”
Cabrera, aged 27, is a right-footed winger who is equally as comfortable in an attacking midfield role, and has been described by City’s Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, as “an exciting, creative player.”
*Fearsomely* nicknamed “Cangrejo” (‘Crab’ in Spanish), the forward struggled for game-time last season in Mexico’s Liga MX, and was limited to just 5 appearances off the bench for Toluca. He then transferred to former youth club Montevideo Wanderers in Uruguay’s Primera División, for whom he took to the field 12 times, scoring one goal.
‘Cangrejo’ Cabrera had his most successful stint, in regards to his goals-to-games ratio, at Argentinos Juniors in the first and second divisions of the Argentinian footballing pyramid, scoring 7 goals and assisting 6 times in 64 appearances.
The Uruguayan has also previously played in Spain’s second division with Recreativo Huelva.
