Having officially departed her NWSL club Olympic Reign earlier today, it seems that beloved City W-League captain Steph Catley might be on the way out after five seasons at the Melbourne club.
Catley has previously hinted at her ambitions of playing in Europe, likely in the English FA Women’s Super League, a competition that would prohibit her from playing in the W-League with City given the coinciding of the English winter and Australian summer.
In a Herald Sun interview earlier this year (referred to in this TWG article), Catley admitted that she’d ‘probably be in Europe by the next transfer window’ with the Matildas star rumoured to be joining former Melbourne City W-League manager Joe Montemurro at women’s football powerhouse Arsenal.
Catley would the latest in an influx of Aussie superstars joining one of the world’s premier women’s leagues if the move were to eventuate, with the recent big-name transfers of Sam Kerr to Chelsea, Caitlyn Foord to Arsenal, Hayley Raso to Everton and Chloe Logarzo to Bristol City all helping to raise the competition’s profile in Australia. Jacynta Galabadaarachchi of West Ham United rounds out the Aussie contingent in the league.
At present, Catley boasts 62 appearances for Melbourne City, netting three goals from her usual left-fullback spot, including the winner in the recent 2019/20 Grand Final against Sydney, her fourth Championship during her time here.
