On a muggy night at Kingston Heath our girls put in a valiant effort against Brisbane Roar, but were unfortunately beaten 1-0.
Despite some close chances, City were just unable to get the result they wanted.
Here are three things we learned:
Hold your heads high
Last night was not the result we were hoping for.
After one of the gutsiest wins in club history on the weekend against Sydney, City were hoping to bring that momentum into this huge game against the Roar.
Whilst the result didn’t go our way, the girls can still hold their heads high. With so many key players missing, to beat league leaders Sydney and put in a hard-fought performance last night was incredibly impressive from a mental standpoint.
The determination and guts shown by this team has been incredible and they should be commended for it.
Our outs killed us
Winning football matches is difficult. Winning matches without your three best players is almost impossible.
With Stott and Wilkinson away on international duty with New Zealand and Holly McNamara out with a season-ending injury, this game was always going to be an uphill battle for City.
The lack of creativity in the final third showed as City struggled to create many clear-cut chances. City also missed the midfield leadership of Stott and struggled to boss the middle of the park.
Without McNamara for the rest of the campaign, but with Stott and Wilkinson’s returns imminent, how vital can the return of these stars prove to be for our title charge?
The race is still on
Last night’s game would have been a perfect opportunity to put ourselves in the driver's seat for the premiership, but the loss does not mean we are out of the fight with Sydney FC yet.
Each team has two matches remaining in the regular season, with only two points separating the two sides. If we can win our remaining games, and Sydney loses either of their tough remaining fixtures against Perth in Tasmania and high-flying Adelaide in SA, the premiership is ours.
But, even if this doesn’t go our way, we still have the finals to try and secure the A-League title. City have won the premiership just twice, but the championship on four separate occasions. The finals are where City truly thrive.
The premiership race may have taken a blow last night, but the push for the title is still very much alive.
